Reverse osmosis systems produce highly purified water, but they also generate a waste (brine) stream that is flushed away. Understanding this ratio helps you estimate your true daily water consumption and decide whether an RO system suits your situation.

How to use this tool

Two inputs drive the calculation:

  • Pure water needed per day — the purified output you actually want, in litres.
  • Waste-to-product ratio — older domestic systems commonly run at 3:1 or 4:1 (three or four litres wasted for every one litre purified). Newer efficient systems can achieve 1:1 or 2:1.

Total tap water = pure water + waste water. A 3:1 ratio means four litres in for every one litre of product.

A little background

Many modern RO systems include a remineralisation cartridge after the membrane stage, adding back calcium and magnesium that were removed during filtration. This addresses one of the common criticisms of RO water — that it is "too pure" and lacks beneficial minerals.

Yes. RO water is safe. Some health commentators raise concerns about mineral removal, but dietary minerals come primarily from food rather than drinking water. Systems with a remineralisation stage restore some mineral content if preferred.

A 3:1 ratio means the system uses four litres of tap water to produce one litre of purified output — three litres are flushed away as concentrate. A 1:1 ratio is far more efficient, using only two litres total for the same output.

Often yes. RO brine is simply slightly more mineral-rich than ordinary tap water. It is commonly used for garden irrigation or mopping floors. Avoid using it on acid-sensitive plants.

RO removes a very broad range of contaminants including nitrates, some heavy metals and most dissolved solids. Carbon-block filters remove chlorine and some organics but not dissolved minerals. Our water filters guide compares the main types.

After RO membranes strip almost all dissolved solids, some systems pass the water through a calcite or mineral cartridge to restore a small amount of calcium and magnesium. This improves taste and addresses concerns about drinking demineralised water long-term.
