- Main goal — different technologies excel at different tasks. Taste and chlorine removal is a different problem from removing dissolved minerals or a wide range of contaminants.
- Budget — some filter types have low upfront costs but higher ongoing cartridge costs; others are the opposite. The tool factors this in.
- Household size — larger households benefit from higher-throughput systems that a pitcher or small countertop unit cannot easily match.

A little background
The four filter types in this tool cover the most widely used home filtration approaches. Activated-carbon filters are the most common and accessible; they remove chlorine and taste compounds well but have limited effect on dissolved minerals or inorganic contaminants. Ion-exchange softeners address hardness specifically by swapping calcium and magnesium for sodium, which is effective for limescale but does not purify in the broader sense.
Reverse osmosis removes a very wide range of dissolved substances through a semi-permeable membrane — effective but also slow and somewhat wasteful of water. Distillers produce extremely pure water by boiling and condensing, though the process uses more energy and time than other methods. No filter is universally best; the right choice always depends on local water quality, household needs and practicalities.
