Temperature scales can be confusing when you switch between recipes, science articles or product specifications. This converter takes a single value in any of the three common scales and shows you all three equivalents at once.

How to use this tool

Enter any temperature and choose the unit it is in. The result updates live:

  • Celsius to Fahrenheit — multiply by 9/5 then add 32.
  • Fahrenheit to Celsius — subtract 32 then multiply by 5/9.
  • Kelvin — simply add or subtract 273.15 from Celsius. Kelvin has no negative values at ordinary water temperatures.

A little background

The three scales differ in their zero points, not their step sizes. Celsius and Kelvin share the same degree size; Fahrenheit uses a slightly smaller step. For everyday water use, Celsius is standard in most of the world; Fahrenheit remains common in the United States.

Kelvin is the SI base unit of temperature and is used in scientific contexts. It starts at absolute zero — the theoretical point at which molecular movement stops — roughly −273.15 °C.

Tool FAQ

At standard atmospheric pressure, water boils at 212 °F (100 °C / 373.15 K). At higher altitudes the pressure is lower, so water boils at a slightly lower temperature.

Boiling point drops with altitude. At 1,500 m above sea level water boils around 95 °C. Some kettles also cut off a degree or two early for safety or energy reasons.

Most people find drinking water refreshing between about 10 °C and 15 °C (50–59 °F). Below about 4 °C it can feel uncomfortably cold. Our guide on whether cold water is harmful looks at the evidence.

There is no strict cutoff, but warm water is typically 40–55 °C (104–131 °F) and hot water above 60 °C. Water above 65 °C can scald the mouth and throat.
