There is no single magic number of glasses that suits everyone. Your body’s water needs shift with your size, how active you are, the weather, and even what you eat.

This calculator gives you a reasonable starting estimate using a simple, widely used rule of thumb, then adjusts it for activity and climate. Treat the result as a gentle guide rather than a strict quota.

How to use this tool

It takes three quick inputs and updates instantly:

  • Body weight — the biggest driver of baseline needs. Switch between kilograms and pounds.
  • Activity — more movement means more water lost through sweat and breathing.
  • Climate — warm and humid conditions increase your needs.

A little background

The baseline uses roughly 33 millilitres of water per kilogram of body weight, a common everyday approximation. We then add a modest amount for activity and for warm weather.

Because it is a simplified model, it cannot account for your full personal circumstances — pregnancy, breastfeeding, certain medical conditions and some medications all change fluid needs. When in doubt, let thirst guide you and check that your urine is a pale straw colour.

For most people that is hard to do, but drinking very large amounts in a short time can dangerously dilute blood sodium. There is no need to force water well beyond thirst.

In warm or humid conditions you lose more water through sweat, so your needs rise. In cool weather they fall.
