Water Usage Estimator
Estimate how much water your household uses each day from showers, toilets, appliances and everyday tasks.
These are approximate household averages. Appliance efficiency varies — check manufacturer labels for more precise figures.
Educational estimates only — not medical, engineering or professional advice.
Most people significantly underestimate how much water flows through their home each day. Showers, toilet flushes and laundry cycles all add up quickly, and knowing your rough total is the first step toward using water more thoughtfully.
This estimator takes five common sources of household water use and combines them into a daily and annual total. The output is an educational approximation — appliance efficiency varies widely, so your real figures may differ.
How to use this tool
Adjust the five inputs to reflect your household's typical habits:
- Shower minutes per day — the tool uses an approximate flow rate of 9 litres per minute.
- Toilet flushes per day — approximately 6 litres per flush for a standard single-flush toilet.
- Dishwasher loads per week — approximately 12 litres per cycle for a modern efficient machine.
- Washing-machine loads per week — approximately 50 litres per cycle.
- Other daily litres — drinking, cooking, hand-washing and any uses not covered above.
Weekly appliance figures are divided by seven to give a daily equivalent. See our guide on water conservation myths for more context on household water use.
A little background
The flow and volume figures used here are common reference values; actual consumption depends on appliance age, settings and personal habits. Older showers may use 15–20 L/min, while water-efficient models use as little as 6 L/min.
Comparing your estimate to the results from the Water Conservation Calculator can help you identify where small habit changes could add up to meaningful savings over a year.
